Beat Bench keeps the bench history of your pendulum clocks: beat readings, rate over days, bushings, springs, oiling and parts. Answers to the questions we hear most are below. If yours isn't here, send us a message with the form.
Common questions
The beat meter doesn't pick up any ticks.
Rest the phone on the case or the seat board, close to the movement, in a quiet room. In Settings › Meter, try Keen sensitivity for quiet movements, or Gentle if the room is noisy. If the meter says the microphone is off, allow microphone access for Beat Bench in the iOS Settings app.
Which way should I bend the crutch?
Nudge the crutch a very small amount either way and watch the trend under the dial. "Getting better" means keep going the same way; "Getting worse" means go back the other way; "Overshot" means you've gone past even, so come back about half as far.
How do I take a rate reading?
In Rate log, tap Take reading and press the bell button at the first blow of the hour or half hour. The app compares that moment with your phone's clock. You can also enter the difference by hand. After two readings a day or more apart, the rate in seconds per day appears.
I moved the rating nut. Why does the rate look wrong?
Switch on "I moved the rating nut" on your next reading. That starts a new run so the old rate isn't mixed into the new one.
How accurate is the rating-nut calculator?
It uses the pendulum formula for the length you enter and the thread you choose. Real pendulums differ a little, so turn the nut in small steps and give the clock a day before judging.
My oiling reminders don't arrive.
Tap the bell on the oiling point and allow notifications when asked. If you declined earlier, turn notifications on for Beat Bench in the iOS Settings app. Reminders fire at the hour set in Settings › Reminders.
How do I move my data to a new device?
Everything stays on your device. Use Settings › Export backup to save a JSON copy of your clocks and logs to Files or anywhere you like. Photos are not included in the backup.
How do I start with an empty bench?
Settings › Reset all data › Start with an empty bench. You can bring back the sample workshop the same way.
